How to Prune a Hydrangea Standard

Details

By Proven Winners for a national audience

Pruning a standard – or tree form – hydrangea is easy. Stacey Hirvela from Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs shows you how in a few easy steps.

Step One: Remove any winter damage.
Step Two: Shorten long, straight branches by one third their length.
Step Three: Cut off any thin branches, which won’t produce large flowers.
Step Four: Trim complicated, forked branches below the bend and just above the emerging buds.
Step Five: Sit back and enjoy!

Hydrangea paniculata varieties, commonly known as panicle or hardy hydrangeas, are available as tree forms at your local garden centers. Look for ‘Limelight’, Quick Fire®, and Pinky Winky® standards.
